ICAN Newsletter - July/August 2023

Updated: Aug 16, 2023

Summer started off so fast and seems to be moving even faster. We enjoyed chatting with you all in Caldwell on the 15th, so much encouragement and excitement for writing. We can't wait to see you all again at our upcoming events.

ICAN's 2023 Book Extravaganza

One of my favorite childhood memories from elementary school was going to the Book Fair twice a year. I would carefully look through all my options before selecting which book I was going to rescue from going back in a box at the end of the week. Oh, I miss that excitement, do you? Well have we got the answer for you! Join us on August 19th for our annual local authors book sale and signing. This year we will be in Middleton at 113 East Main St. from 9am to 5pm. We will have at least 20 local authors there to sign and sell their books. Collectively, there will be over 100 titles to choose from.

From JoEllen's desk:

How well do you know your characters? How well do you know yourself? I recently attended a very interesting workshop that talked about the Enneagram Personality Test and how we can use it to give our characters more depth. A person will identify with a main characteristic. However, when under stress, they will take on the negative attributes of a different personality on the chart. For instance, if one identifies on the chart as a Type 2 (The Helper), under stress that person will likely take on the negative traits of Type 8 (The Challenger) and will lose your tenderness and instead

experience irritability and even rage.

It was so interesting to look even deeper at the core positive and negative motivators for each identity. Here is a brief list:

Type 1 (The Reformer)– Core Desire: Being right and good.

Core Fear: Being bad or wrong.

Type 2 (The Helper) – Core Desire: Being wanted and loved.

Core Fear: Being unwanted and unlovable.

Type 3 (The Achiever) – Core Desire: To be valuable and admired.

Core Fear: Being not valuable and not admired.

Type 4 (The Individualist) – Core Desire: To be Authentic and to find meaning.

Core Fear: Being without significance and having no meaning.

Type 5 (The Investigator) – Core Desire: To be competent and capable.

Core Fear: Being invaded and overwhelmed.

Type 6 (The Loyalist) – Core Desire: To be secure and supported.

Core Fear: Being without support and without security.

Type 7 (The Enthusiast) – Core Desire: To be satisfied and content.

Core Fear: Being deprived and trapped in emotional pain.

Type 8 (The Challenger) – Core Desire: To be independent and able to protect themselves.

Core Fear: Being controlled and being weak.

Type 9 (The Peacemaker) – Core Desire: Being at peace and harmonious.

Core Fear: Being separated and being at loss with others.

What a great tool to make your characters more believable to the reader! This may also be helpful to understand your own behaviors better as well as the characteristics of those in your life. Many people we know right now are writing memoirs and looking further into this concept could be very helpful in those projects.
